The Umpqua National Forest of the Pacific Northwest Region of the USDA Forest Service is seeking invasives and restoration interns for work in previous fire scars created from burns that happened from 2020 to the present. The Umpqua National Forest covers almost a million acres in the southern Oregon Cascades. The forest headquarters are based out of Roseburg, OR, with four ranger districts, including 3 wilderness areas. Several large fires across this forest have burned more than 150,000 acres since 2020, and many of these areas will need additional invasive control and native plant restoration to recover.

Interns will work in a two-person team to hike along roads and trails, and off-trail, in the front and backcountry, in these previously burned areas. Interns will need to operate field trucks safely across rugged two-tracks and four-wheel-drive roads. Intern teams will sometimes work with a larger group to accomplish bigger tasks. Tasks include invasive plant surveys and control or removal projects, native plant seeding, native seed collection, and electronic and paper data collection using ArcGIS online, Field Maps, and Survey 123. Interns will be trained in basic native and invasive plant identification, seed collection, invasive control techniques, and data collection methods. Herbicide is currently not used on the Umpqua National Forest.

Interns in these positions will qualify for PLC job eligibility, and a housing stipend is included in the cost estimate, as well as use of a FS vehicle. Rooms in government housing will likely be available.
