Invasive & Restoration Interns at Mt. Hood National Forest (PO-00734401)

The Mt. Hood National Forest is seeking invasives and restoration interns for work in previous fire scars from 2020 to the present. The Mt. Hood National Forest manages a million acres of forest, including the iconic Mt. Hood. The headquarters are located in Sandy, Oregon, and the forest is split into 4 ranger districts across the central cascades. This is one of the most visited forests in the country and has experienced catastrophic wildfires over the last few years, drastically increasing the need for native plant restoration.

Interns will work in a two-person team to hike along roads and trails, and off-trail, in the front and backcountry, in previously burned areas. Interns will need to operate field trucks safely across rugged two-tracks and four-wheel-drive roads. Intern teams will sometimes work with a larger group to accomplish tasks. Tasks include invasive plant surveys and control or removal projects, native plant seeding, native seed collection, and electronic and paper data collection using ArcGIS Online, Field Maps, and Survey 123. Interns will be trained in basic native and invasive plant identification, seed collection, invasive control techniques, and data collection methods. Interns may be licensed for herbicide application as needed.

Interns in these positions will qualify for PLC job eligibility, and a housing stipend is included in the cost estimate, as well as the use of an FS vehicle. Please ask the hiring supervisor for more specifics about housing availability either on-site or in the area.

Member Compensation Package:

  • $1,100 from travel allowance (one time)
  • $550 weekly living allowance (paid bi-weekly)
  • $50 weekly commuting allowance (paid bi-weekly)
  • $500 monthly housing allowance (4 disbursements)
  • $2,000 Duty-Related Travel & Other Reimbursable Funding (Receipt required)
  • All Weather Uniform Package
  • 24-7 Incident Response
