TITLE: SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER
JOB GOAL: To teach assigned students with disabilities in academic, social, behavioral, and emotional needs according to the established curriculum and the students’ (ages 3 – 21) Individualized Education Program and to perform other duties relating to student safety, control, welfare, and growth.
REPORTS TO: Principal
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
1. Valid Georgia teaching certificate and appropriate training and occupational experience required.
2. Is highly qualified to teach the subject and/or class assigned as defined by the Georgia Professional Standards
Commission by having passed the appropriate GACE test or provide written documentation that exempts the test requirement within 20 days of employment.
3. Ability to relate well to individuals, groups of students, and parents.
4. Must have a thorough knowledge of state and federal laws relating to students with disabilities.
5. Physical demands – position requires significant standing and some sitting, kneeling, and walking. Must be able to lift,
carry, push and pull up to (40) pounds, and will usually be in the area of twenty (20 – 25) pounds. Must be able to
move about the classroom and monitor student behavior.
JOB DUTIES:
1. Plans the objectives for each assigned course according to RCPS goals; selects meaningful subject matter and learning experiences appropriate to various stages of pupil development; utilizes appropriate teaching procedures.
2. Arrives at work on time each day fully prepared for each class and/or other duties.
3. Provides adequate supervision, while maintaining good order and discipline, to students under one’s care.
4. Conducts assessments, identifies needs, completes eligibilities, and prepares effective IEP.
5. Uses standard acceptable written and oral expression.
6. Plans and uses appropriate instructional strategies to support the curriculum and the student’s IEP.
7. Provides consultative services to teachers, parents, administrators and agencies in order to integrate IEP goals with the
curriculum.
8. Organizes caseloads, follows due process procedures, and appropriately and accurately completes compliance
paperwork.
9. Maintains strict confidentiality with regard to all aspects of student information.
10. Assures placement of students in correct classes and provides teachers with student accommodations.
11. Consults with the School Support Team as needed.
12. Effectively manages the behavior of learners to ensure the environment is conducive to learning, and assists in the
management of student behavior in other parts of the school and school grounds.
13. Works in a self-contained, team, departmental or itinerant capacity as assigned.
14. Maintains up-to-date and accurate student grade records and attendance records.
15. Ensures continuous effective communication with parents, both oral and written, to keep them informed of student
progress and behavior.
16. Supports and participates in school-wide activities, social events, and fundraisers.
17. Complies with all requirements for mandatory reporting of child abuse, illegal harassment, or criminal activity of which
the employee becomes aware.
18. Effectively supervises and accurately evaluates the paraprofessional.
19. Assists in development of IEP’s for students.
20. Participates in IEP conferences, placement conferences or parent conferences concerning students.
21. Observes students in regular classes who are being reviewed for possible special education services.
22. Reviews with classroom teacher the special education students’ needs and progress.
23. Meets the performance and behavioral expectations of the principal; performs other duties as assigned.
24. Demonstrates an attitude and demeanor that contributes to an atmosphere of harmony and good will in the work
place among peers, staff, administrators, students and parents.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Position works 190 days.
