Position Description

We are currently seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Helen Hou at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (houlab.org), starting in Fall 2023 or Spring 2024. You will play a decisive role in the research program of an interdisciplinary lab with the latest technologies in neuroscience, studying how the brain controls movements and natural behaviors, including but not limited to how the brain coordinates muscles of facial expressions to convey internal states.

Our goal is for you to do world-class research in a new research area, learn new skills, develop and build your CV to become an independent scientist or lab head in academia or industry. You are expected to push your own project forward, and to help train and mentor more junior scientists in the lab. Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is located east of New York City on Long Island, conveniently accessible with the Long Island Rail Road (1-hr ride from Penn Station).

Position Requirements

You should have completed or be nearing completion of a PhD degree in STEM (science, technology, engineering, or mathematics) and have research experience in neuroscience or relevant fields of biology and bioengineering. We are especially interested in candidates with experience working with mice, performing electrophysiology, imaging, behavioral, anatomical analyses, and/or analyzing large datasets. We can train you in these techniques if you don’t know them.

We look for candidates who are curious about the brain and behavior, with strong experimental and analytical skills. Your cover letter (please direct any questions to hou@cshl.edu) should explain why you are interested in our research, specific motivations to apply for this postdoctoral position and to work at CSHL, and (optional) potential areas/projects you would like to work on.

Environment

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is a world-renowned biomedical research institution in New York. It has shaped contemporary biomedical research and is the home of eight Nobel Prize laureates. Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory provides a highly dynamic and interactive research environment and also a unique opportunity of timely exposure to advances in various biomedical research fields and of interaction with a broad range of researchers from all over the world through its renowned Meetings and Courses program: CSHL organizes dozens of scientific conferences and advanced technical science courses each year, giving lab members a unique opportunity to network and learn from a wide variety of top-tier scientists.

We believe that science is for everyone. We have had researchers with a variety of backgrounds and believe in the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Supplemental Information

Our employees are compensated in many ways for their contributions to our mission, including competitive pay, exceptional health benefits, retirement plans, paid time off, and a range of recognition and wellness programs.
