AAAS has an exciting opportunity for a paid summer internship within our Science & Technology Policy Fellowships (STPF) department!

The Marketing & Communications Intern supports the Outreach & Engagement Communication Systems (OECS) team by assisting with content development, campaign support, data organization, and outreach activities related to fellowship recruitment and engagement. This internship is designed as a learning-focused opportunity that provides hands-on exposure to nonprofit marketing, digital communications, and outreach strategy in a mission-driven organization.

Under close supervision, the intern will contribute to multiple projects and shadow ongoing marketing and recruitment efforts. The role is educational in nature and does not carry responsibility for managing campaigns, systems, or operational workflows.

What You’ll Do

  • 30% Marketing & Communications Support: Assist with drafting and editing content for emails, websites, and social media. Support content planning by helping maintain editorial calendars and campaign timelines. Review and format marketing materials to ensure consistency with brand guidelines. Conduct light research on outreach channels, audiences, or peer programs.
  • 25% Campaign & Engagement Assistance: Support recruitment campaigns by preparing assets, reviewing links, and performing quality checks. Assist with organizing audience lists and monitoring email campaigns across STPF.
  • 20% Data, Reporting & Evaluation Exposure: Assist with compiling basic engagement metrics (e.g. email performance, event attendance)
  • 15% Events & Outreach Support: Assist with logistics for virtual and in-person recruitment events (e.g. Live Chats, Recruitment booth/tabling)
  • 10% Administrative & Special Projects: Support documentation, file organization and process guides. Participate in professional development activities, team meetings and check-ins.

Minimum Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an Associate’s, Undergraduate, Master’s, or PhD program in marketing, communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field
    or a recent graduate (within the past year)
  • Interest in marketing, communications, nonprofit work, or science policy
  • Strong written communication skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines in a learning environment
  • Comfort working collaboratively and receiving feedback

Preferred Qualifications

  • Coursework or experience related to digital marketing, analytics, or communications
  • Demonstrated portfolio of social media or creative work
  • Familiarity with social media platforms or email marketing tools
  • Interest in higher education, fellowships, public service, or science-related fields

Internship Details

This internship will be expected to come into the D.C. office 1-2 times a week on a hybrid-work basis. This is a 12-week internship, which will run from June 1, 2026 – August 21, 2026. The anticipated initial rate of compensation for this position is $17.95 per hour.
