Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB) is the world’s most comprehensive education, rehabilitation, and service program serving individuals of all ages who are Deaf, Blind, DeafBlind, and multidisabled and their families. Founded in 1858, AIDB serves more than 32,000 infants, toddlers, children, adults, and seniors with hearing and vision loss throughout Alabama each year.

As a Speech-Language Pathologist in the Outreach Instructional Services program, you will serve as an integral part of a multi-disciplinary team tasked with providing instructional support and resources to professionals serving students who are deaf/hard of hearing, blind/visually impaired, and multidisabled across Alabama. The right candidate for this job will have a passion for supporting and coaching others to ensure that a free appropriate education is accessible to children with sensory differences.

ABOUT YOU

You will play a vital role in the success of students and be a part of the miracles that happen every day at AIDB. This will be accomplished by demonstrating flexibility, positive attitude, and professional maturity. You will provide Outreach Instructional Services to school systems across the state of Alabama.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited college or university.
  • Professional licensure through the Alabama Board of Examiners in Speech Pathology and Audiology (ABESPA).
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) from the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ASHA).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in working with children with complex communication needs such as deaf/hard-of-hearing, blind/visually-impaired, deaf-blind, developmental delay, intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorders, and augmentative communication devices users preferred.
  • Knowledge of various types of communication devices (including various augmentative communication device systems, hearing aids, cochlear implants, FM systems, etc.) is desired.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Keep abreast of current trends in speech-language pathology diagnostics and therapeutic practices.
  • Communicate effectively and maintain rapport within the unit as well as across AIDB departments, local education agencies, and other partner organizations.
  • Work a flexible schedule, traveling across the state to identified and requested locations.
  • Maintain records using the project management system in place to document services provided and to keep track of professionals, parents, and students served.
  • Conduct record reviews and observations of students to prepare for consultations, evaluations, and support services.
  • Serve in a consultative support capacity for professionals working with children across Alabama.
  • Evaluate students’ language and communication skills.
  • Maintain a professional image at all times.
  • Collaborate with Individualized Education Program Teams, upon request, to assist in program planning and implementation.
  • Coordinate the preparation and distribution of information for various annual events.
  • Actively participate in student staffings and departmental meetings.
  • Connect parents and professionals with resources provided by other AIDB units, ADRS, and other community resources.
  • Collaborate with AIDB’s network of Regional Centers across the state.
  • Attend pertinent professional development sessions and maintain membership in organizations related to speech-language pathology.
  • Keep abreast of the use and maintenance of various types of equipment (including AAC devices, hearing aids, cochlear implants, FM systems, etc.). Train others as needed.
  • Serve as an active and collaborative member of the multidisciplinary team that makes up the Special Education/Outreach unit.
  • Protect confidentiality of student information.
  • A sign language proficiency level of SURVIVAL PLUS according to the AIDB evaluation system must be obtained within the first twelve (24) months of employment and INTERMEDIATE within the first thirty-six (36) months.
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
  • Upon offer of employment, the applicant must submit to a fingerprint background check at an agency designated and paid for by AIDB.

SALARY: $57,804 ­- $75,438 Rank I1 Scale IT (MA – Class A)

$61,537 – $79,720 Rank IT Scale AA (AA Certification)

197 Days

This is an exempt position and is not subject to overtime and/or compensatory time provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
